Enhancing the Detection of Cervical Cancer--Reducing Undetected Abnormalities on Pap Smears

Although the Pap smear test has been one of the most successful screening technologies ever introduced in the management of cancer, the incidence of undetected abnormalities on test slides continues to be unduly large. The underlying factors are various, and include problems of sampling, detection and identification. Government regulation of cytopathology laboratory practices have been only partially successful. New technologies to reduce these problems are now becoming available, but are meeting considerable resistance, largely for economic reasons. Communicore is engaged in a broad-based program to tackle this important women's health issue.

Supportive Therapies for Cancer Chemotherapy

The inherent toxicity of cancer chemotherapy underscores the importance of quality of life as a treatment goal along with prolonging survival. As the potential benefit of chemotherapy increases, so does the responsibility to attend to the risks and side effects--physical, psychological, economic and societal--of that treatment.

Ultrasound in Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Advances in breast cancer diagnosis lag behind efforts to encourage widespread screening. Biopsy is effective, but costly, invasive, and can cause physical and emotional trauma. One solution--high resolution digital ultrasound--can be used as an adjunct to mammography to better distinguish between benign and malignant breast masses.
