Mitchell Seyedin, Ph.D. - Founder, Chairman of the Board and Chief Scientific Officer has extensive business development and general management experience in both start-up and large company environments. He was most recently the co- founder and Vice President of Research and Development at Metra Biosystems. Prior to Metra Biosystems, he was a Director of Research at Collagen Corporation. He received his Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from the University of South Carolina and completed his postdoctoral training in Biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. Michael Sumner Estes, Ph.D. - President and Chief Executive Officer has over 20 years in positions of increasing responsibility in the global medical device industry developing and establishing high technology businesses in the cardiovascular field. He was a Group Vice President of Baxter Healthcare from 1990 to 1996 and served eighteen months as President of Baxter Japan. He began his career with the American Hospital Supply Corporation's Edwards Laboratories division eventually becoming President of American's Cardiovascular Company. Dr. Estes received his undergraduate training in Biology at the University of Pennsylvania and his M.S. and Ph.D. at West Virginia University in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. James W. Poser, Ph.D. - Vice President, Research and Development is well known for his work in bone chemistry and skeletal metabolism. Prior to joining Orquest, he was the Senior Vice President of Research and Development at Osteotech. Previously, he was Director of Research at Intermedics Orthopaedics, Inc. and served as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Center, Principal Scientist and Head of Bone Growth Factor Program at Mitral Medical International, and a research scientist at Procter and Gamble. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California San Diego. Steven R. Carlson - Vice President, Marketing, Sales and Operations was formerly the Senior Vice President of Marketing at Allergan. Mr. Carlson worked with Allergan for 15 years playing key roles in marketing and strategic planning. From 1989 through 1994, he held worldwide responsibility for initiating, developing and launching of a neuromuscular product, Botox¨, for Allergan. James B. Andrews, CPA - Controller founded and operated his own management consulting firm from 1988 to 1995. He assisted public and private corporations with their financial management needs, generally in an acting chief financial officer or acting controller capacity. Previously, Mr. Andrews held significant financial management positions with three different companies and became a certified public accountant while working at Deloitte and Touche. Robert Christopher Spiro, Ph.D. - Director of Bone and Cartilage Research came to Orquest from Telios Pharmaceuticals in San Diego where he held the position of principal scientist and directed the basic research studies of the Decorin Proteoglycan project from 1991 to 1994. Two years prior to this he was a senior research associate and assistant member in the Department of Immunology at the Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, CA from 1984 to 1991. Dr. Spiro received his Ph.D. in Immunology from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester MA. F. Jerry Volenec, Ph.D. - Director of Product Development brings extensive experience in the development of drugs, biologics and devices to Orquest. Most recently he worked with Cytel Corporation as their Director of Product Development and previously was with Becton Dickinson where he held the position of Director of Reagent Product Development. He also worked with Hana Biologics (now Somatix) and with Endotronics in a management capacity. Prior to his industrial experience he was the Director of Development Cell Biology at the School of Basic Life Sciences, University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Medicine. Dr. Volenec completed his Doctorate training in Virology and Immunology at Cornell University. Board of Directors Kenneth W. Anstey has over 25 years of broad experience in the medical device industry. He was formerly the President and CEO of Biofield Corp. Prior to Biofield, he was President and CEO of Mitek Surgical Products, Inc., a medical device company developing products for the orthopedic market. Mitek is now a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson. Prior to Mitek, he was with Bristol Myers Squibb Corporation where he held several senior management positions including that of President of Conva Tec and Edward Weck Inc. Prior to that, he was Vice President and Area Manager with American Hospital Supply Corporation. Mr. Anstey has an M.B.A. in Marketing and Finance and a B.A. in Advertising from Michigan State University. Annette M. Bianchi is a General Partner of Weiss Peck & Greer Venture Partners and has over 11 years of experience investing in early stage life science companies. Prior to Weiss Peck & Greer, she was a general partner at Burr, Egan, Deleage & Co. Her areas of expertise include biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, healthcare services and medical information systems. She has also served as a seed investor in such companies as Cephalon, CellPro, and HiLife. She holds a B.S.E. in biomedical engineering, magna cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School. George Dunbar is President and CEO of Metra Biosystems, Inc. He has international business experience in high technology fields including healthcare, life sciences/biotechnology, and electronics. Mr. Dunbar went to Metra Biosystems from The Ares-Serono Group, a Swiss healthcare company, where he established a licensing, business development, and acquisitions group for their diagnostic and pharmaceutical businesses. Prior to this, Mr. Dunbar served as Vice President of Amersham Corporation, Chicago, where he was the General Manager of Amersham International's life science business. He has lived and worked in Europe twice; while in the UK, he was General Manager, Eastern Region for Amersham International. He also originated and managed the marketing activities for a specialized line of medical and industrial radioisotopes for the same company. He has also worked with Motorola's Communications Division. Mr. Dunbar has a B.S.E.E. and M.B.A. from Auburn University. Russell C. Hirsch, M.D., Ph.D. is a General Partner of Mayfield Fund and joined Mayfield in 1991 following more than 9 years of medical and scientific research experience. Mayfield Fund is a leading venture capital firm with interests in health care technology and information technology. Dr. Hirsch currently focuses on health care information systems, medical devices, and health care services. He has helped start or finance a number of health care technology companies including Tularik, Focal, Millennium Pharmaceuticals and Megabios. In addition, he is a director of Megabios, Neuroperfusion, Araxsys, Inc., Orquest, Intuitive Surgical Devices and Vida Healthcare Inc. He holds an M.D. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California, San Francisco, and a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Chicago. Craig C. Taylor has been active in venture capital since 1977 when he joined Asset Management Company. He has Bachelor's and Master's degrees in physics and an M.B.A. from Stanford University. Prior to joining Asset Management Company, he worked as a design engineering consultant and in technology licensing at Stanford University. He is a General Partner of Asset Management Associates, AMA 84, AMA 89 and AMA 96. He is a member of the board of directors of Lynx Therapeutics, Metra Biosystems, and Pharmacyclics, in addition to several other companies. Scientific Advisory Board Mark E. Bolander, M.D. is an Associate Professor at the Mayo Medical School, Rochester, MN. His research focuses on extracellular matrix proteins in bone and cartilage, regulation of gene expression in fractures by bone growth factors, and the treatment of fractures under impaired healing conditions. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Orthopaedic Research, Wound Repair, and Regeneration and the Mayo Clinic Proceedings. David S. Bradford, M.D. is a Professor and Chairman of the Orthopaedic Department at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) where he is an internationally known spine surgeon. Prior to UCSF, he was Professor, Orthopedic Surgery and Chief of Spine Surgery at the University of Minnesota Hospitals in Minneapolis. Dr. Bradford specializes in treating spinal problems and deformities in both children and adults, particularly scoliosis. Joseph A. Buckwalter, M.D. is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Iowa where he specializes in cartilage research biology. He is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Orthopaedic Research and consultant Reviewer and Consulting Editor for Research of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He is on several advisory boards dealing with osteoarthritis and rheumatology research. Thomas A. Einhorn, M.D. is a Professor of Orthopaedics and Director of Orthopaedic Research at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. His research focuses on fracture healing and metabolic bone disease. He is actively involved in caring for patients and designing and implementing clinical trials of growth factors. He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Orthopaedic Research, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, and the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and serves as the Associate Editor of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. Herbert Fleisch, M.D. is a Professor of Pathophysiology at the University of Bern, Switzerland. He is a specialist in bone and calcium metabolism with over 200 peer- reviewed publications, and serves on numerous editorial boards of publications related to bone research. He has served as the Dean of the Medical Facility of the University of Bern, and is a past President of the Union of the Swiss Associates for Experimental Biology. Ernst B. Hunziker, M.D. is a Professor of Biomechanics and the Director of the M.E. Muller Institute for Biomechanics at the University of Bern, Switzerland. His areas of research and clinical expertise include cartilage, bone growth, and other skeletal tissues. Dr. Hunziker is the Associate Editor of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and is a member of the editorial board of Histochemistry. Joseph M. Lane, M.D. is a Professor at Cornell University Medical College and the Director of Orthopedic Laboratory Research and Tissue Engineering at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. His extensive research interests comprise collagen metabolism and structure, cartilage preservation and transplantation, and metabolic diseases including skeletal tumors, connective tissue injury and repair, and bone regeneration.
